Practical overview
When it fits
Use it as a starting scaffold when developing a Truffle-based Ethereum dApp with a Next.js client, especially when you want an example of the contract-to-frontend ABI connection.
Who it is for
- Developers building or learning to build Ethereum dApps with Solidity and a React frontend.
- Developers seeking a starter example of connecting a Next.js client to Truffle-generated contract ABIs.
Documented uses
- Create a Truffle project with a SimpleStorage example contract.
- Compile, migrate and test smart contracts locally using Truffle.
- Use generated contract ABI definitions in a Next.js frontend.
- Start a basic frontend for connecting to and interacting with a contract on a network.
Requirements & limits
- The frontend lives in the
clientdirectory and links to generated ABI output. - The supplied example contract is SimpleStorage.
- The documented local chain uses port 9545 with Truffle Develop; the README gives separate configuration instructions for TestRPC.
- Contract updates require manual recompilation and migration.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and run the local starter
Install the Truffle Box, compile and migrate its example contract, start the Next.js frontend, and run tests.
Before you start
- Node.js and npm, to run the documented npm and Truffle commands.
- Truffle installed globally.
- The Truffle Next Box and its installed dependencies.
Steps
Install Truffle with the command below.
npm install -g truffleDownload the project and install its dependencies with
truffle unbox adrianmcli/truffle-next.Start the development console with
truffle develop, then runcompileandmigrateinside it.In a separate shell, change to
clientand run the command below; the README says the frontend is served athttp://localhost:3000.npm run devRun tests inside the development console with
test, or outside it withtruffle test.
Expected outcome
A local frontend and Truffle development workflow for the included example contract, with a documented command for running Solidity or JavaScript tests.
Guide limitations
- Contract changes must be manually recompiled and migrated.
- The README’s MetaMask instructions require adding
http://localhost:9545as a custom RPC network to work withtruffle develop.
