Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a Python or shell workflow needs Etherscan-sourced Ethereum account, token or network data for downstream processing and analysis.
Who it is for
- Python developers who need Etherscan API bindings for account, statistics or token data.
- Data analysts assembling wallet or ERC-20 transaction datasets for CSV workflows or network visualization.
- Shell users who want to incorporate wallet and token data retrieval into command-line pipelines.
Documented uses
- Retrieve Ether balances and wallet transaction data.
- Extract ERC-20 token transactions and look up token balances.
- Retrieve smart-contract ABIs for downstream analysis.
- Fetch Ether price or total supply information.
- Prepare transaction data for CSV workflows or Gephi network visualization.
Requirements & limits
The documented API bindings require an Etherscan user account and API key. The README describes supplying the key at runtime and using api_key.json for its examples. The repository is public and provides installation instructions; no license is specified in the provided repository evidence.
- The README lists account, stats and token API bindings; it says other Etherscan modules were planned.
- The all-transactions workflow may take at least 20 minutes for a token’s full history.
- The documented token extraction workflow has operating-system-specific GNU sed instructions.
- The wallet inspector is marked experimental, relies on an undocumented API and requires additional formatting.
- The repository describes the project as ongoing and lists robust documentation and a unit test suite as TODOs.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare ERC-20 transaction data for CSV workflows
Retrieve token transaction data, preprocess the output, and optionally convert it to CSV.
Before you start
- Python 3.6, as shown in the documented commands
- A token address
- On macOS, GNU sed; on Linux, change gsed in fix_batch.sh to sed
Steps
Run the command below.
python3.6 all_transactions.py > tokenname.preprocessedAfter retrieval completes, run
./fix_batch.sh tokenname.preprocessed.If a CSV is needed, run the command below.
python3.6 convert-wallet.py
Expected outcome
A preprocessed token transaction file, with an optional CSV conversion step.
Guide limitations
- The README says retrieving every transaction for a token takes at least 20 minutes.
- ERC-20 transfer details are embedded in transaction input data and may require further extraction.
- The documented command sequence is project guidance, not an execution test.
