Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a JavaScript or TypeScript application needs Ethereum network access, wallet handling, account utilities, transaction support, or smart-contract interaction.
Who it is for
- JavaScript developers
- TypeScript developers
- Ethereum application builders
- Teams creating wallet-enabled web or server-side applications
Documented uses
- Connect an application to Ethereum nodes and provider services
- Import and export Ethereum wallet formats and mnemonic-based wallets
- Create JavaScript objects from smart-contract ABIs
- Build Ethereum transaction, account, and contract-interaction utilities
- Use ENS names in Ethereum application workflows
Requirements & limits
The project is publicly available as open-source software under the MIT License. The documentation describes shared default provider keys for initial development; these keys are intentionally throttled, and developers can obtain their own provider keys for greater capacity and additional provider features.
- TypeScript is the primary language, with strict types described in the project documentation.
- The library supports browser ESM and Node.js installation paths.
- Tree-shaking is emphasized so bundlers can include only the needed functionality.
- Provider access can use JSON-RPC, MetaMask, and several named third-party services.
- Wallet support includes JSON wallets, mnemonic phrases, and HD wallets.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Ethers.js in a Node.js project
Add the ethers package to a Node.js project.
Before you start
- A Node.js project with npm available.
Steps
Open a terminal in the project directory.
Run the command below.
npm install ethersImport the installed package in the project as needed.
Expected outcome
The ethers package is added to the Node.js project for Ethereum development.
Guide limitations
- This recipe documents installation only; it does not cover provider configuration or application execution.
Load the bundled library in a browser with ESM
Use the bundled browser library from the repository in a JavaScript module.
Before you start
- A browser page that can run JavaScript modules.
- The repository's
./dist/ethers.min.jsbundle.
Steps
Place or access the bundled library from the repository's
./dist/folder.Add a module script to the page.
Import
ethersfrom./dist/ethers.min.js.
Expected outcome
The browser page loads the bundled Ethers.js module.
Guide limitations
- The documented example covers loading the bundle, not connecting to an Ethereum provider or building a complete dApp.
