Practical overview
When it fits
Use PocketFlow when developing a compressed version of an existing deep-learning model and balancing inference efficiency against accuracy, including for a documented mobile deployment workflow.
Who it is for
- Developers seeking to improve inference efficiency for deep-learning models.
- Teams preparing models for deployment on mobile devices with limited computational resources.
Documented uses
- Set a desired compression or acceleration ratio and search for model compression settings.
- Generate and evaluate compressed model candidates.
- Apply channel pruning, weight sparsification, or supported quantization methods.
- Fine-tune a compressed model or retrain it using full training data.
Requirements & limits
The project is described as open source and is published as a public GitHub repository.
- The framework evaluates candidates using both accuracy and computational efficiency, so compression is treated as a trade-off rather than a size-only objective.
- Fast fine-tuning can take less time than retraining with full data; the documentation says full-data retraining usually takes longer and can lead to higher accuracy.
- The README describes multi-GPU distributed training for its learners.
- The documentation does not specify supported model ecosystems or runtime platforms.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Understand PocketFlow’s model-compression search workflow
Use the documented learner and hyper-parameter optimizer workflow to select a compressed model from an original model.
Before you start
- An uncompressed original model.
- A compression learner and hyper-parameter optimizer; PocketFlow lists pruning and quantization learners and GP, TPE, and DDPG optimizer implementations.
Steps
Provide an uncompressed original model to the learner.
Have the learner generate candidate compressed models using hyper-parameter combinations selected by the optimizer.
Evaluate each candidate’s accuracy and computation efficiency, and feed the evaluation back to the optimizer.
Repeat the search for several iterations and select the best candidate; optionally retrain it with full training data.
Expected outcome
The search outputs the best candidate compressed model; full-data retraining is an optional documented step to further reduce performance loss.
Guide limitations
- The sources do not specify commands, configuration details, or exact iteration counts.
- Full-data retraining usually takes longer than fast fine-tuning.
- PocketFlow aims to improve inference efficiency with little or no performance degradation, but this is not guaranteed.
