Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you have a Bitcoin Core chainstate directory and want a local CSV view of positive address balances, or when you need the companion address-conversion step.
Who it is for
- Bitcoin node operators who want to analyze their local chainstate UTXO set.
- Developers building local workflows around Bitcoin address balances or CSV data.
- Users who need to convert BTC addresses in a CSV to RIPEMD-160 representations.
Documented uses
- Aggregate unspent outputs associated with the same Bitcoin address.
- Export addresses with positive balances from a local chainstate snapshot.
- Add RIPEMD-160 representations for BTC addresses in a CSV.
Requirements & limits
- The project requires Python 2.7; its documentation says Python 3 does not work.
- Bitcoin Core must be stopped before the utility reads its chainstate database to avoid possible database corruption.
- The output represents the local chainstate snapshot and can lag the network.
- Unsupported transactions and transactions without addresses may be omitted.
- The project states that BTC is supported and that other clients have not been tried.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Export positive Bitcoin balances from chainstate
Create a CSV of addresses with positive balances from a Bitcoin Core chainstate database.
Before you start
- Python 2.7 and pip.
- The required packages installed with pip: plyvel, base58 and sqlite3 on Linux; plyvel-win32, base58 and pysqlite3 on Windows.
- A Bitcoin Core chainstate directory.
Steps
Allow the Bitcoin Core full node to sync if you need a current local snapshot.
Stop the Bitcoin Core client before using the database.
Run the command below.
python btcposbal2csv.py /path/to/chainstate /path/to/addresses_with_balance.csv
Expected outcome
A CSV listing addresses with positive balances aggregated from the local UTXO set.
Guide limitations
- The CSV reflects the local chainstate and will be behind the network.
- Transactions that the decoder does not support or that have no address are omitted; the utility reports their number and total amount.
- The project says Python 3 does not work and that only BTC is currently supported.
