Practical overview
When it fits
Use the specification when designing or consuming a portable package for Agent Skills or MCP servers, especially when a client needs a defined manifest and discovery layout.
Who it is for
- Developers building agent clients that need to discover packaged skills.
- Teams defining reusable, distributable agent extensions.
- Tooling developers exploring manifest validation, package indexing or plugin installation based on the specification.
Documented uses
- Package an agent skill with a manifest in a defined directory layout.
- Build a client-side loader that reads plugin.json and discovers skill files.
- Use a shared package format as a foundation for tools that validate, index or install agent extensions.
Requirements & limits
The specification and its documents are available in a public repository.
- Specification 1.0.0 is identified as the current published release; 1.1.0 is a working draft.
- The documented discovery flow requires a client that supports skills.
- The specification does not prescribe how discovered skills are exposed to users or models.
- The format defines packaging; loaders, registries and validators are potential downstream tools rather than functions provided by the specification.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a minimal skill plugin
Create the documented directory and file structure for a one-skill Agent Plugins package.
Before you start
- A plugin directory
- A plugin.json manifest
- A skill file at skills/greet/SKILL.md
Steps
Create a directory named hello-plugin.
Add plugin.json with the 1.0.0 schema URL and the name hello-plugin.
Create skills/greet/SKILL.md with name and description front matter, followed by the skill instructions.
Expected outcome
A minimal plugin package with one skill, which a client that supports skills can load by reading the manifest and discovering the skill file.
Guide limitations
- The specification does not define how a client exposes the discovered skill to users or models.
- This guide covers package setup, not client integration or execution.
