Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when a PHP application needs to send Milvus vector or database operations through the Milvus REST API, rather than implementing those requests directly.
Who it is for
- PHP developers integrating vector search or vector-data operations with Milvus.
- Laravel teams that want to use the provided facade and service-provider configuration.
- Developers using standalone Saloon connectors without Laravel.
Documented uses
- Search a Milvus collection for vectors similar to a supplied vector.
- Insert, upsert, retrieve, query or delete vector records.
- Create, inspect, list or drop collections and manage Milvus databases from PHP.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies the MIT license. Installation is documented through Composer.
- Laravel is optional; the client can also be used as a standalone Saloon connector.
- The README lists PHP 8.3–8.5 and Laravel 12–13 as supported; Laravel 10 and 11 are marked for legacy compatibility.
- The client targets Milvus REST v2 endpoints shared by Milvus 2.5–3.0 and reports testing against Milvus 2.5.21, 2.6.21 and 3.0.0.
- Authentication configuration accepts a token or, in Laravel, a complete username-and-password pair used to build the raw
username:passwordtoken.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the client and publish Laravel configuration
Add the package to a PHP project and, for Laravel, publish its configuration file.
Before you start
- PHP 8.3–8.5
- Composer
- Laravel is required only for the configuration-publishing step.
Steps
Install the package with Composer using
composer require helgesverre/milvus.In a Laravel project, publish the configuration with the command below.
php artisan vendor:publish --tag="milvus-config"Configure the Milvus host and port, and provide either a token or a complete username-and-password pair.
Expected outcome
The package is installed, and a Laravel project has the published Milvus configuration file available.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers installation and configuration only; it does not establish a successful connection.
- Laravel 10 and 11 are listed as legacy compatibility targets, while Laravel 12–13 are supported.
Search a Milvus collection from Laravel
Use the documented Laravel facade example to request a similarity search against a collection.
Before you start
- The package installed in a Laravel application
- Milvus REST v2 access and configured credentials
- An existing collection and a search vector compatible with its vector field
Steps
Import
HelgeSverre\Milvus\Facades\Milvus.Call
Milvus::vector()->search()with the collection name, the query vector indata, and the vector field name inannsField.
Expected outcome
The application issues a vector similarity search request to Milvus.
Guide limitations
- The example shows the request shape, not returned results or a verified connection.
- The documented sample uses
vectoras the field name; the README identifiesvectoras a reserved field name for vector data.
