Practical overview
When it fits
Use MatchZoo when developing or comparing deep-learning approaches to text-pair classification and ranking, such as question answering or information retrieval.
Who it is for
- Developers and researchers building deep-learning text-matching experiments.
- Teams exploring ranking or classification tasks involving questions, answers, queries, documents, dialogs or paraphrases.
Documented uses
- Prepare text-pair data for a matching model.
- Configure and train a model for a classification or ranking objective.
- Evaluate ranking or matching approaches using metrics such as NDCG and mean average precision.
Requirements & limits
The public GitHub repository lists an Apache-2.0 license and provides installation instructions for PyPI and GitHub source.
- The documented toolkit depends on Keras and TensorFlow.
- The repository README identifies Python 3.6 and 3.7.
- The documented example covers a DSSM ranking workflow; other use cases may require different models and task configurations.
- MatchZoo-py is identified as a separate PyTorch version.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Train and evaluate a text-ranking model
Follow the README’s WikiQA example to prepare ranking data and train a Deep Semantic Structured Model.
Before you start
- Python 3.6 or 3.7, as listed in the repository README.
- MatchZoo installed from PyPI or from its GitHub source.
- Keras and TensorFlow dependencies.
- WikiQA data accessible through MatchZoo’s dataset loader.
Steps
Load WikiQA training and development data with the ranking task.
Fit a DSSM preprocessor on the training pack and transform both data packs.
Configure the ranking task with the documented loss and metrics, then initialize, build and compile a DSSM model.
Create a pairwise training generator and fit the model while evaluating metrics on the development data.
Expected outcome
A trained DSSM ranking model with validation metrics evaluated during training.
Guide limitations
- The example is specific to the DSSM and ranking workflow shown in the README.
- The README’s example uses 20 epochs and five workers; those values are example settings, not a performance or compatibility guarantee.
