Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Wireshark-based view of supported Solana peer-to-peer packets can help investigate network behavior or debug protocol traffic.

Who it is for

  • Solana developers examining peer-to-peer network traffic.
  • Network analysts using Wireshark to inspect supported Solana packet types.

Documented uses

  • Inspect supported gossip, shred and repair messages in a Wireshark capture.
  • Decode Solana TPU traffic over UDP.
  • Decode selected Solana transactions in gRPC bundles when mev-protos is available in Wireshark's search path.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The plugin is written in Lua and is licensed under GPL-2.0.
  • The documented installation procedure targets macOS and the standard Wireshark application path.
  • Port handling uses hardcoded mappings, so “Decode As” may be necessary for captures using other ports.
  • Coverage is partial: the README lists unsupported gossip transaction v0 data and FEC recovery, and marks TPU over QUIC as in progress.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install the plugin in Wireshark on macOS

Place the Solana Lua dissector in Wireshark's plugin directory and activate it.

Before you start

  • macOS
  • Wireshark installed at /Applications/Wireshark.app

Steps

  1. Download solana.lua from the repository's raw main-branch URL to /Applications/Wireshark.app/Contents/PlugIns/wireshark/solana.lua.

  2. Activate the plugin with Cmd+Shift+L, or restart Wireshark.

Expected outcome

The Lua dissector is installed in the documented Wireshark plugin directory and activated.

Guide limitations

  • The documented installation procedure is for macOS.
  • Hardcoded port mappings may not match a capture; use Wireshark's “Decode As” to select a protocol when needed.
