Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a Docker Compose-managed local container with Solana development tools and SSH access, rather than assembling those tools separately.
Who it is for
- Developers setting up a local workspace for Solana programs with Anchor and Rust.
- Developers who want Mocha available in the same container for Solana-related testing.
- Developers running a web project alongside Solana development tools.
Documented uses
- Build and start a bundled Solana development container.
- Connect to the container over SSH and complete its documented Solana installation step.
- Use the container as a shared workspace for Solana tooling and a web project.
Requirements & limits
The README requires Docker and Docker Compose on the host and documents SSH access with a password.
- The toolset is bundled in a container managed by Docker Compose.
- The setup includes a separate Solana installation-script step after the container starts.
- The README lists port 22 for SSH, ports 8899 and 8900 for Solana, and port 3000 for a web project.
- A line-ending error for the installation script has a documented
sedworkaround.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and start the development container
Prepare the container and connect to it over SSH for the documented Solana installation stage.
Before you start
- Docker and Docker Compose installed on the host
- The solana-docker repository downloaded and unzipped or cloned
Steps
Open a terminal in the repository folder.
Run
docker-compose build, then rundocker-compose up -dafter the build completes.Connect with
ssh sshuser@127.0.0.1using the documented passwordpassword.Run
./solana-install.shin the container, enterpasswordwhen prompted, follow the prompts, and wait for it to finish.Exit the SSH session and reconnect to begin working with Solana.
Expected outcome
A running container with the documented tools, with the installation script completed and SSH access available.
Guide limitations
- The instructions do not specify host operating-system compatibility or a particular development or test command.
- The README documents a line-ending workaround if the script fails with a
/bin/bash^Mbad-interpreter error. - The README says to run
docker-compose downafter exiting SSH to stop the container.
