Practical overview
When it fits
Use BlockBench when a platform comparison or performance investigation needs repeatable workloads, and select a macro or micro benchmark according to whether the question concerns overall processing or a particular layer.
Who it is for
- Developers comparing private blockchain platforms.
- Researchers and engineers examining performance across blockchain system layers.
Documented uses
- Compare overall performance using YCSB or SmallBank workloads.
- Measure consensus behavior with DoNothing.
- Evaluate read/write or analytical data-model workloads with IOHeavy or Analytics.
- Examine execution-layer performance with CPUHeavy.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under Apache-2.0.
- The workload set spans key-value and OLTP macro benchmarks as well as consensus, data-model, analytics, and execution micro benchmarks.
- Repository instructions cover Ethereum, Hyperledger Fabric 0.6, 1.4 and 2.2, Parity, and Quorum.
- Dependencies include C++ libraries and Node.js packages; benchmark-specific blockchain software and SDKs are also listed.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare BlockBench micro-workload dependencies
Install the Node.js dependency libraries used by BlockBench micro workloads.
Before you start
- A Node.js environment with npm available.
- Access to the BlockBench repository.
Steps
Open the repository's
src/microdirectory.Run the command below there to install the dependency libraries.
npm install
Expected outcome
The micro-workload dependency libraries listed by the project are installed.
Guide limitations
- This covers dependency installation only; it does not describe configuring a blockchain system or running a benchmark.
- The README does not specify Node.js or npm versions.
Prepare patched restclient-cpp for Parity benchmarks
Apply BlockBench's supplied patch to restclient-cpp before proceeding with its normal installation for Parity RPC processing.
Before you start
- A restclient-cpp source directory.
- The BlockBench repository, including
benchmark/parity/patch_restclient.
Steps
Go to the top-level directory of restclient-cpp.
Apply the BlockBench patch with
patch -p4 < $BLOCK_BENCH_HOME/benchmark/parity/patch_restclient.Proceed with the normal restclient-cpp installation.
Expected outcome
The patch adds an `Expect: ` header to POST requests, which the README says considerably improves RPC request processing speed at Parity.
Guide limitations
- The README does not provide the normal installation procedure or a verification test.
- This patch guidance is specific to the Parity setup.
