Practical overview
When it fits
Use Textsum when you want to run transformer-based summarization from a Python environment, either within code or over text files in a directory.
Who it is for
- Python developers adding text summarization to an application or workflow.
- Users who need to summarize one text file or a directory of text files from a terminal.
Documented uses
- Generate a summary from a text string in Python.
- Summarize a text file and save the result to a path.
- Process a directory of text files through the CLI.
- Adjust model, batching and summary-generation options through CLI flags.
Requirements & limits
The documented installation uses pip and requires Python 3.8 or later. The repository lists an Apache-2.0 license.
- The default Summarizer loads a default model and parameters; CLI flags allow model and generation settings to be adjusted.
- PDF OCR, the Gradio demo UI and Optimum are listed as optional extras, separate from the basic install.
- The project offers a Python API and CLI; the README also identifies a shareable demo app as a distinct interface.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
