Practical overview
When it fits
Use Outlines when a Python LLM workflow needs responses in a known structure that downstream code can handle, rather than unconstrained text followed by ad hoc parsing.
Who it is for
- Python developers building applications that use language-model responses.
- Teams that need model outputs shaped as classifications, typed values, or structured records.
Documented uses
- Generate a response constrained to a fixed set of labels.
- Extract a typed value, such as an integer, from a model response.
- Represent generated information as structured records for tasks such as product reviews or support tickets.
Requirements & limits
The library is available as a public GitHub repository under the Apache-2.0 license. The README says the separate .txt API is in early access.
- The documented quickstart connects a Transformers model and tokenizer; choose a workflow based on the model integration you need.
- The output type can be simple, such as
intor aLiteral, or a complex Pydantic model. - Outlines is a library used within a Python application, not a standalone model or hosted app.
- The README identifies the .txt API as a distinct early-access offering.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Outlines with a Transformers model
Install the library, connect a Transformers model and tokenizer, and request a typed response.
Before you start
- Python environment with pip
- Outlines installed with
pip install outlines - Transformers package and a model/tokenizer; the quickstart names
microsoft/Phi-3-mini-4k-instruct
Steps
Install Outlines with the command below.
pip install outlinesLoad a Transformers causal language model and tokenizer, then pass them to
outlines.from_transformers.Call the resulting model with a prompt and an output type, such as
intorLiteral["Positive", "Negative", "Neutral"].For a complex result, define a Pydantic model and pass it as the output type; the example then validates the returned JSON with
model_validate_json.Use the returned typed value in the application, as illustrated by printing the classification, integer, or review fields.
Expected outcome
A Python workflow that requests structured model responses, with examples for a classification, numeric answer, and Pydantic review record.
Guide limitations
- The quickstart documents the Transformers connection; it does not establish requirements for other model integrations.
- The repository describes the separate .txt API as early access; this recipe covers the Python library.
