Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a codebase to inspect or adapt for a multimodal AI web application and can supply the project setup and provider credentials needed for your use case.
Who it is for
- Developers creating an Angular-based AI web interface.
- Teams looking for a TypeScript example of a separate client and server-side AI integration layer.
- Developers studying or adapting a backend gateway and provider abstraction for AI requests.
Documented uses
- Start a full-stack TypeScript project with separate frontend and backend workspaces.
- Build a web interface for text, image OCR and image-generation interactions.
- Adapt a Node.js/Express server that routes requests through model-provider plugins.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists an MIT license. Local development requires Node.js v22 or higher, npm and Angular CLI; Docker and Docker Compose are optional.
- It is a reference blueprint rather than a hosted, ready-to-use product.
- The documented frontend uses Angular, while the backend uses Node.js and Express.
- The README states that a Gemini API key is needed for image generation; text generation and image OCR can run in demo mode.
- The repository documents CI checks and test suites, but says component-template rendering and browser end-to-end tests are not included in CI.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up and run the blueprint locally
Install the repository dependencies and start its Angular frontend and Node.js backend in development mode.
Before you start
- Node.js v22 or higher and npm
- Angular CLI
- A cloned copy of the repository
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Copy env.example to .env.
Install dependencies with npm install.
Run npm run dev to start the frontend and backend.
Expected outcome
The documented local development addresses are http://localhost:4200 for Angular and http://localhost:3000 for the backend.
Guide limitations
- The README says a Gemini API key is required for image generation; text generation and image OCR remain available in demo mode without it.
- The repository is a scaffold to build on, not a turnkey hosted service.
