Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when you want a filmmaking-oriented workspace to plan scenes and shots before generating media, rather than managing generation as a series of disconnected prompts.

Who it is for

  • Filmmakers and storytellers planning AI-generated scenes and shots.
  • Developers who want to run or contribute to an open-source filmmaking workstation.

Documented uses

  • Block out scenes and position cameras in a 3D storyboard.
  • Generate storyboard images and turn shots into video.
  • Use multiple references to support continuity across shots.
  • Add dialogue and audio, then export a film timeline.
  • Connect local ComfyUI generation or cloud generation through Fal or Replicate.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and specifies an AGPL-3.0 license. The README documents local setup and cloud provider credentials; it does not state a price.

  • ComfyUI is the local generation engine and must be started separately in the manual setup.
  • Fal or Replicate credentials are needed for their cloud generation options; the README says to restart the backend after saving a key before cloud drivers appear.
  • The README labels the project a work in progress and notes that features may change and some pipelines are experimental.
  • The documented stack includes Python 3.10+, FastAPI, Next.js, React, Three.js and Tailwind CSS.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up AI Movie Studio 2 locally

Start the documented local application with ComfyUI as its image and video generation engine.

Before you start

  • Python 3.10+
  • Node.js and npm
  • A running ComfyUI installation
  • Three terminal windows for the documented manual setup

Steps

  1. In the backend directory, install dependencies with the command below and create a backend/.env file; cloud API keys are optional for local ComfyUI use.

    Documented command
    pip install -r requirements.txt
  2. In the frontend directory, run the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install
  3. Start ComfyUI with the command below from its installation directory.

    Documented command
    python main.py
  4. Start the backend with the command below from backend; the README gives http://localhost:8001/health for a health check.

    Documented command
    python main.py serve --reload
  5. Start the frontend with the command below from frontend, then open http://localhost:3000.

    Documented command
    npm run dev

Expected outcome

The local frontend and backend are started with ComfyUI available as the generation engine.

Guide limitations

  • This guide follows the README's manual developer setup; it does not establish that every feature or pipeline is stable.
  • Cloud generation requires provider credentials; ComfyUI must be running separately.
