Practical overview
When it fits
Use Clockwork when building Solana smart-contract automation, developing locally with its CLI, or evaluating the documented worker-node route for participating in its automation network.
Who it is for
- Solana developers building programs that need automated or scheduled actions.
- Developers who want to develop and inspect Clockwork programs on localnet.
- Node operators considering deploying a Clockwork worker on a Solana validator or RPC node.
Documented uses
- Develop Clockwork programs against a localnet node and inspect program logs.
- Connect Rust, Anchor or TypeScript clients and frontends to Clockwork bindings.
- Prepare a validator or RPC node to participate in the automation network by installing the Geyser plugin and following worker onboarding.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and licensed under AGPL-3.0. The README describes worker deployment as an onboarding process and directs operators to request an earlybird token delegation through the workernet Discord channel.
- The repository separates local program development from worker deployment; worker participation requires a validator or RPC node with the Geyser plugin.
- Client bindings are available for Anchor, Rust and TypeScript, with examples linked from the repository.
- The project warns that interfaces and implementations can change and that some major releases may require migration to a new program.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Start a Clockwork localnet development environment
Install the Clockwork CLI, start a localnet node and view its program logs.
Before you start
- A Linux environment may require pkg-config, build-essential, libudev-dev and libssl-dev.
- Cargo is used to install clockwork-cli.
- The Solana CLI is used to stream local program logs.
Steps
On Linux, install the listed system packages if needed.
Install the CLI with the command below.
cargo install -f --locked clockwork-cliStart a local node with
clockwork localnet. In another terminal, stream logs with
solana logs --url localhost.
Expected outcome
A localnet node is running and program logs can be streamed from localhost.
Guide limitations
- This documents local development and log streaming, not deployment of a Clockwork worker.
- The README notes that interfaces and implementations may change.
