Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when Hermes Agent and its CLI are already installed on the same machine and you want a browser-based console for agent operations and host-level oversight.

Who it is for

  • Operators running Hermes Agent on a server who want browser-based management.
  • Teams coordinating multiple Hermes agent profiles and swarm task pipelines.

Documented uses

  • Review agent sessions, gateway state, logs and host metrics.
  • Chat with Hermes, use a browser terminal, and browse or edit server files.
  • Manage cron jobs, Hermes skills and MCP server processes and configuration.
  • Inspect token usage trends, cost projections and budget alerts.
  • View agent health, kanban task lanes and live swarm events.

Requirements & limits

Self-hosted; the documented setup requires configuring HERMES_CONTROL_PASSWORD and HERMES_CONTROL_SECRET. The project repository identifies the license as MIT.

  • Requires Node.js 20+, Hermes Agent on the same machine and the hermes CLI on PATH.
  • The documented stack includes Node.js, Express and WebSocket, with Vite, xterm.js, Chart.js and better-sqlite3.
  • The interface documents roles and profile-based access restrictions; deployment and access configuration remain operator responsibilities.
  • Production installation guidance is separate from the local quick start.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the dashboard for local access

Install HCI and start its documented local server.

Before you start

  • Node.js 20 or later
  • Hermes Agent installed on the same machine
  • The hermes CLI available on PATH
  • A login password and session secret

Steps

  1. Clone the HCI repository and change into its directory.

  2. Copy .env.example to .env and set HERMES_CONTROL_PASSWORD and HERMES_CONTROL_SECRET.

  3. Run npm install followed by npm run build.

  4. Start the server with node server.js and open http://localhost:10274.

Expected outcome

The README's local quick start provides a browser-accessible HCI instance at localhost:10274.

Guide limitations

  • This is the documented local quick start; production setup is covered separately in the installation documentation.
  • The guide does not establish that this setup has been executed or verified.
