Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you can provide an Ethereum backend node and want a self-hosted interface for exploring a specific ERC-20 token.
Who it is for
- Operators who want to host a browser interface for a chosen ERC-20 token.
- People inspecting token transactions, accounts, or Transfer and Approval events.
Documented uses
- Browse an ERC-20 token’s transactions and accounts.
- Inspect Transfer and Approval event logs.
- Enumerate accounts and assign account names.
- Check the status of the connected backend node.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and specifies the GPL-3.0 license. The documented setup runs the explorer locally.
- The explorer reads from a connected Ethereum node; it is not described as a standalone hosted data service.
- The README documents Parity and lists Geth as untested.
- The README's setup instructions name Ubuntu 16.04 and warn that initial export for large tokens may take up to 30 minutes.
- Backend connections can use IPC or HTTP.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up the explorer for an ERC-20 token
Configure and start a local ERC20-Exporter instance connected to an Ethereum backend.
Before you start
- Ubuntu 16.04, listed as the supported operating system
- A Node.js and npm environment
- Parity Ethereum client; Geth is listed but marked untested
Steps
Start Parity with the documented option
parity --warp.Clone
https://github.com/gobitfly/erc20-explorerand install dependencies with the command below.npm installRename
config.js.exampletoconfig.jsand adjust it for the local environment and token.Start the explorer with the command below, then browse to
http://localhost:3000.npm start
Expected outcome
A local browser interface for exploring the configured token through the connected Ethereum node.
Guide limitations
- The documented setup targets Ubuntu 16.04.
- Geth is explicitly described as untested.
- Initial data export for large tokens can take up to 30 minutes; afterward, the README recommends setting
exportStartBlockto about 30,000 blocks behind the chain tip and restarting.
