Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you need to deploy and customize an AWS-based chatbot, especially when conversations should draw on configured knowledge or when agents should assist with multi-step tasks.
Who it is for
- AWS teams building a conversational assistant backed by Amazon Bedrock.
- Organizations that want to configure bots with their own instructions and knowledge or share bots among application users.
- Administrators managing bot permissions, API settings and bot usage.
Documented uses
- Provide a web chat interface connected to Amazon Bedrock models.
- Create custom bots that use supplied instructions and knowledge through RAG.
- Import an existing Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Base for use with bots.
- Share customized bots with application users through a bot store.
- Use an agent to retrieve information from external tools or divide a task into steps.
Requirements & limits
The documented deployment requires an AWS environment and access to the Amazon Bedrock models selected for use. Customized-bot creation is restricted to users in the CreatingBotAllowed group.
- Model access must be enabled for the Bedrock models the deployment will use; the README describes model selection in the Bedrock console.
- Choose a Bedrock region where the service is available. Bots and knowledge bases using the default OpenSearch Serverless option also depend on regional support for OpenSearch Serverless and ingestion APIs.
- Only members of the CreatingBotAllowed group can create customized bots.
- The README describes a shared Knowledge Base mode that attaches Bot ID metadata to filter files across bots, addressing the stated default limit of 100 Knowledge Bases per AWS account.
- The V3 migration warning says V2 bots become unusable without careful migration; review the migration guide before updating an existing deployment.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Enable Amazon Bedrock model access for Bedrock Chat
Allow selected Amazon Bedrock models in us-east-1 before using them with Bedrock Chat.
Before you start
- Access to the AWS console and the Amazon Bedrock Model access page in us-east-1.
Steps
Open the Bedrock Model access page in us-east-1.
Choose Manage model access.
Select the models you wish to use.
Save the changes.
Expected outcome
The selected models have been requested through Bedrock Model access for use by the application.
Guide limitations
- The documented step covers model access only; it does not describe deploying Bedrock Chat.
- For deployment involving bots and knowledge bases, the README says to use a region where OpenSearch Serverless and Ingestion APIs are available.
