Pinecone Scala Client

Pinecone Scala Client is a community-maintained asynchronous Scala SDK for calling Pinecone’s vector database API. It provides service interfaces for vector and index operations, plus collection, inference, assistant and assistant-file operations.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a Scala application needs an asynchronous client for Pinecone API operations and the team can provide Pinecone credentials and the Scala/Akka setup the library documents.

Who it is for

  • Scala developers integrating Pinecone into server-side applications
  • Teams building asynchronous workflows for vector search, index management, embeddings, reranking or Pinecone assistant operations

Documented uses

  • Query, upsert, fetch, update and delete vectors through Pinecone API calls
  • Create, list, describe, configure and delete indexes and collections
  • Call Pinecone inference operations for embedding, reranking and evaluation
  • Manage assistants and assistant files, and call assistant chat operations

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the MIT license. The README documents dependency installation through sbt or Maven; no price or account terms are specified here.

  • This is an SDK that calls Pinecone; it is not the vector database infrastructure.
  • The documented setup requires an execution context and Akka materializer, alongside API configuration.
  • Pod-based configuration uses an environment value in addition to the API key; the documented serverless factory accepts an API key.
  • The README calls the project community-maintained and states that it has no relationship with Pinecone.
  • The README lists two top-level dependencies: play-ahc-ws-standalone and play-ws-standalone-json.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Add the client and configure an index service

Set up the documented Scala dependency and obtain a Pinecone index service instance.

Before you start

  • Scala 2.12, 2.13 or 3
  • An sbt or Maven build
  • Pinecone API key; pod-based configuration also requires the environment value
  • An implicit execution context and Akka materializer

Steps

  1. Add the documented io.cequence client dependency to build.sbt or the corresponding Maven artifact to pom.xml.

  2. Provide an execution context and Akka materializer in the application.

  3. Set PINECONE_SCALA_CLIENT_API_KEY; for pod-based service use, also set PINECONE_SCALA_CLIENT_ENV.

  4. Obtain PineconeIndexService through the factory using default or custom configuration, or supply the API key directly for the documented serverless option.

Expected outcome

The application has an index-service instance to use for the library’s supported Pinecone index operations.

Guide limitations

  • The README describes service acquisition, not a complete application workflow or a verified successful connection.
  • The pod-based and serverless configuration paths differ; the environment variable is specified for pod-based use.
