Practical overview

When it fits

Consider FFCV when data input is limiting training throughput and your workflow can accommodate dataset conversion and loader configuration. The project documents a PyTorch quickstart and benchmark code for ImageNet and CIFAR.

Who it is for

  • PyTorch developers seeking to reduce data-loading bottlenecks in model training.
  • Computer-vision researchers working with ImageNet, CIFAR or custom image datasets.
  • Teams using indexed PyTorch datasets or WebDatasets who can adapt their data input pipeline.

Documented uses

  • Convert indexed PyTorch datasets or WebDatasets into FFCV format.
  • Replace a PyTorch data loader with FFCV’s loader while retaining the rest of a training loop.
  • Configure per-field decoding, augmentation, tensor conversion and device transfer.
  • Start from the project's prepackaged ImageNet or CIFAR training code.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The library is publicly available as an Apache-2.0-licensed GitHub repository. The README documents installation for Linux and Windows.

  • The workflow involves converting data into FFCV format before using its loader.
  • The quickstart shows PyTorch integration and says the remaining training loop can proceed identically.
  • Installation requirements vary by platform; Linux instructions specify Python 3.9 and CUDA Toolkit 11.3, while Windows setup requires manual dependency and PATH configuration.
  • Field types, decoding, augmentation and loader parameters must be selected for the dataset and training pipeline.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Convert a PyTorch image dataset and configure an FFCV loader

Prepare indexed image-and-label data in FFCV format and use an FFCV loader in a PyTorch training loop.

Before you start

  • Python project using PyTorch and an indexed torch.utils.data.Dataset that returns image-and-label pairs.
  • FFCV installed; the repository documents Linux and Windows installation instructions with platform-dependent dependencies.
  • A writable output path for the converted .beton dataset.

Steps

  1. Create a DatasetWriter for the output path and declare an RGBImageField and an IntField for the image and label.

  2. Call writer.from_indexed_dataset(my_dataset) to write the dataset in FFCV format.

  3. Define image and label pipelines using decoders and transforms appropriate to the data, then construct Loader with the output path, batch size, worker count, ordering option and pipelines.

  4. Replace the existing PyTorch data loader with the FFCV loader in the training loop.

Expected outcome

The dataset is converted to FFCV format and the documented example uses an FFCV loader while leaving the rest of the training loop unchanged.

Guide limitations

  • The example assumes image-and-label records and requires choosing field types, decoder, transforms and loader settings for the dataset.
  • The quickstart does not specify values for batch size, worker count or training-loop details.
