Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when a prompt needs structured refinement, evaluation across outputs, or ongoing reuse. Connect a working text model for the first online prompt workflow.

Who it is for

  • People improving instructions for AI text or image generation.
  • Prompt authors who want to compare outputs and maintain reusable prompt assets.
  • Developers deploying a prompt workspace or connecting it to MCP-compatible AI applications.

Documented uses

  • Iteratively improve system or user prompts.
  • Analyze a prompt result or compare multiple results.
  • Test prompts with variables, multi-turn conversations or function calling.
  • Save prompts with version history and reusable examples.

Requirements & limits

The project documents an online app, desktop app, Chrome extension and self-hosted deployment options. No pricing or general account requirement is specified in the cited project documentation.

  • Model requests are sent directly to the configured AI provider; the online app stores app data in the browser.
  • The README lists providers including OpenAI, Gemini, DeepSeek, Grok, Zhipu AI, SiliconFlow and MiniMax.
  • Private deployment can enable password access control.
  • The project warns that VITE-prefixed model keys are exposed in browser assets and should not be preconfigured on public frontend deployments.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Deploy Prompt Optimizer with Docker Compose

Start the Docker Compose service and access its web interface locally.

Before you start

  • Docker Compose.
  • A clone of the Prompt Optimizer repository.

Steps

  1. Clone the repository and change into its directory.

  2. Create a root .env file for any API keys and authentication settings you intend to configure; ACCESS_PASSWORD enables password protection.

  3. Start the service with the command below.

    Documented command
    docker compose --env-file .env -f docker/docker-compose.yml up -d
  4. Open http://localhost:8081 to access the web interface.

Expected outcome

The Compose service is started and its web interface is available at `http://localhost:8081`.

Guide limitations

  • The Compose file is in docker/, so the root .env must be passed explicitly.
  • Do not preconfigure VITE_* API keys on public frontend deployments because those values are exposed in browser assets.
