Practical overview
When it fits
Use Harbor when you want a desktop interface for supported ecash mints and Bitcoin or Lightning fund movement, and are prepared for a source-build workflow and alpha-stage software.
Who it is for
- People exploring or managing ecash through Fedimint or Cashu mints.
- Bitcoin users who want to move funds between ecash mints and existing on-chain or Lightning wallets.
- Developers or technically confident users prepared to compile an alpha desktop application from source.
Documented uses
- Interact with supported ecash mints.
- Move money into and out of mints using existing Bitcoin wallets.
- Manage or spread funds across multiple mints.
- Run Harbor in the background to move funds automatically.
Requirements & limits
The current documented installation path requires compiling from source; the README says binaries will be available in the future.
- Harbor is explicitly labeled alpha, may change rapidly, and carries a stated risk of losing funds.
- The documented build workflow uses Nix and a Nix development shell.
- Linux Nix support is still in progress; the documented macOS build script targets Apple Silicon.
- The project says operations run over Tor and frames privacy as a goal, not a transaction-level guarantee.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build and launch Harbor from its repository
Prepare a local Harbor build and launch the desktop app using the repository's documented Nix workflow.
Before you start
- A desktop computer running macOS, Windows or Linux.
- The Harbor repository and Nix; the README says the current workflow uses a Nix development shell.
- The README notes Linux Nix support is still in progress and may not work.
Steps
Clone the Harbor repository and enter its directory.
Install Nix if it is not already installed, following the installation prompts and post-install instructions.
Enter the development environment with
nix develop.Use
just runfor a debug build and launch, orjust releasefor a release build.
Expected outcome
A locally compiled Harbor desktop app launched through the documented debug command, or a release build.
Guide limitations
- The project is alpha software; its feature set may change rapidly and the README warns of a risk of losing funds.
- Linux Nix support is in progress and may not work.
- The README notes Linux users may need to exit the Nix shell to run the program.
