Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a self-hosted interface or CLI to organize image prompts, references, generation tasks and results while connecting to a supported external model provider.
Who it is for
- People who want a local WebUI or CLI for image generation and editing through supported providers.
- Users who reuse prompts and reference images across creative tasks.
- Individuals organizing multiple image tasks, outputs and prompts in a local history.
- Developers evaluating or adapting an AGPL-3.0 image-generation application.
Documented uses
- Generate images from text prompts using a configured GPT Image or Gemini provider.
- Use reference images and model-supported image-editing workflows.
- Reuse prompt templates, gallery references, color chips and prompt fragments.
- Run concurrent generation tasks and track their local queue status.
- Search, filter, tag, favorite and export historical tasks and their images.
Requirements & limits
- The project is a workbench; image generation depends on configuring a supported provider and model.
- The README recommends OpenAI-compatible API mode for shared, team or potentially public use.
- The advanced local Codex/ChatGPT OAuth mode is described for personal local workflows and may be affected by changes to the internal interface.
- The documented source setup requires Python 3.11 or later.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the WebUI from source
Prepare the documented Python environment for running the WebUI.
Before you start
- Python 3.11 or later
- Git and network access to clone the repository and install its pinned dependencies
Steps
Clone the repository and change into its directory.
Create a Python virtual environment named .venv.
Install the WebUI requirements using the provided requirements-webui.txt file and pip's require-hashes option.
Expected outcome
The repository and its pinned WebUI dependencies are present in a Python virtual environment; the documented startup step is separate.
Guide limitations
- These steps cover setup only, not starting the WebUI or connecting a provider.
- The README's manual startup command is truncated in the available documentation.
