Practical overview
When it fits
Use an individual skill for a clear, bounded task; use the `fde` coordinator when requirements are uncertain, teams depend on one another, or customer work needs coordination across strategy, architecture and engineering.
Who it is for
- Forward-deployed engineers using AI coding agents on customer projects.
- Engineers who need structured guidance for a bounded implementation, investigation or handover task.
Documented uses
- Turn a customer request into an investigated problem, success measure and bounded scope.
- Compare architecture options against customer constraints and plan a small testable slice.
- Build or integrate a change, debug failures, review agreed behavior and prepare an operating handover.
- Carry decisions, evidence and next steps between sessions using the coordinator's customer record.
Requirements & limits
The project is public on GitHub under the MIT license. Its documented installation commands use Node.js and Git; the optional record CLI requires Node.js 18 or later.
- The 35 individual task skills can be used independently; the coordinator includes their underlying methods but does not add all task names to the agent menu.
- The coordinator uses a local Markdown customer record for decisions, evidence and next steps; the standalone build skill can work from supplied project context without a record.
- The project distinguishes local verification from deployment or customer acceptance and recommends reusing customer tools and approvals.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install the FDE coordinator for an AI coding agent
Add the FDE coordinator skill to the agent workflow so it can select relevant methods as customer work changes.
Before you start
- An AI coding agent and its terminal
- Node.js and Git
- An agent environment that can select the installed skill
Steps
Run the command below in the terminal where the agent runs.
npx skills add suboss87/fdeops --skill fdeSelect
fdein the agent, or invoke it as@fdewhere supported.Provide the customer context and task brief for the coordinator to guide the work.
Expected outcome
The FDE coordinator and its underlying instructions are available to guide customer-project work.
Guide limitations
- Installing
fdedoes not add the 35 separate task names to the agent's menu. - The optional record CLI requires Node.js 18 or later.
Add the build skill for a bounded implementation task
Make the FDEOps build instructions available for one implementation task using supplied project context.
Before you start
- An AI coding agent and its terminal
- Node.js and Git
- Agreed behavior, a repository and checks to provide as task context
Steps
Run the command below in the terminal where the agent runs.
npx skills add suboss87/fdeops --skill buildAsk the agent to use FDEOps build and provide the agreed behavior, repository and checks.
Expected outcome
The agent receives the build skill instructions and the supplied context for the implementation task.
Guide limitations
- This route does not require a customer record or installation of the coordinator.
- The skill instructions do not establish deployment or customer acceptance.
Compare options for AI coding assistance
These projects document a common task and share a project role. This is a source-based comparison, not an execution benchmark or a guarantee of interchangeability.
| Project | Documented purpose | Platform | Access and requirements |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fdeops | Turn a customer request into an investigated problem, success measure and bounded scope. | CLI | The project is public on GitHub under the MIT license. Its documented installation commands use Node.js and Git; the optional record CLI requires Node.js 18 or later. |
| Spectra | Clarify requirements and compare approaches before proposing a change. | CLI, Desktop | The README lists a macOS and Windows desktop app, and a Homebrew installation for macOS. The CLI is published through npm and requires Node.js 22.14 or newer. |
| Skills — michaelshimeles | Install reusable task-specific skills into a coding-agent setup. | CLI | The repository README provides an npx installation command for most coding agents and describes automatic or explicit skill invocation in Claude Code. |
