Practical overview
When it fits
Use YiVal during GenAI application development when you want to configure prompt-related experiments or generate test examples through its CLI.
Who it is for
- Developers building or refining generative-AI applications
- Teams that want to generate test examples from configured prompts
Documented uses
- Generate example datasets for testing a GenAI application
- Explore prompt variations and application configurations through experiments
Requirements & limits
- The documented dataset-generation example requires Python 3.10 or later and an OpenAI API key.
- The README provides pip and Docker installation paths, plus Poetry setup for development.
- The documented example writes its generated dataset to a CSV file.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Generate a small test dataset with YiVal
Create a CSV dataset of three generated landing-page headlines using a configured OpenAI prompt generator.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or later
- An OpenAI API key available as the OPENAI_API_KEY environment variable
- YiVal installed with pip, or an installed repository environment
Steps
Install YiVal with pip install yival, or follow the repository's Poetry development setup.
Create the documented YAML configuration for a machine-generated dataset, specifying an OpenAI prompt data generator, the input function, three examples, and generated_examples.csv as the output path.
From the /YiVal/src/yival directory, run yival run config_data_generation.yml.
Expected outcome
The documented example writes generated test examples to generated_examples.csv.
Guide limitations
- The example requires an OpenAI API key and specifies gpt-4.
- The example generates data; it does not document evaluation or deployment.
