Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you want a command-line workflow to inspect or retrieve Hugging Face repositories, especially when selecting particular model files or quantizations.
Who it is for
- Developers who need Hugging Face model or dataset files in local workflows.
- Users who want to inspect repository contents or choose among model variants before downloading.
Documented uses
- Download a model or dataset repository from Hugging Face Hub.
- Inspect repository formats, model metadata, branches, or dataset structure before selecting files.
- Choose GGUF quantizations using quality ratings and RAM estimates.
- Keep downloaded files in the standard Hugging Face cache for use by Python libraries.
Requirements & limits
The README documents binaries for Linux, macOS, and Windows, plus a setup-script installation path for Linux, macOS, and WSL. Public repositories can be downloaded without a token; private repositories require a Hugging Face token, and gated repositories also require prior license acceptance.
- The project is a Go-based CLI rather than a hosted model library.
- Its analyzer covers several repository types, while the interactive quality and RAM picker is specifically described for GGUF models.
- The README documents parallel downloads, automatic resumption, and verification controls.
- Downloaded files use the standard Hugging Face cache location.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install HuggingFace Downloader from its setup script
Install the command-line utility in a user-level bin directory.
Before you start
- A supported Linux, macOS, or WSL environment.
- Go is needed only if building from source.
Steps
Run the documented setup script with the install action.
The default installation location is ~/.local/bin, or ~/bin if that directory is already on PATH.
To choose another location, pass the desired path to the install action.
Expected outcome
The hfdownloader command is installed at the selected location.
Guide limitations
- A system-wide installation path such as /usr/local/bin may require sudo.
- The README describes Windows binary downloads separately from the setup script.
Download a public Hugging Face repository
Retrieve a model or dataset repository through the command line.
Before you start
- HuggingFace Downloader installed, or use of its documented setup script to run without installation.
- A Hugging Face repository identifier.
Steps
Run the download action with the repository identifier.
Optionally add an inline quantization or file filter to select specific files.
The tool stores downloaded files in ~/.cache/huggingface/.
Expected outcome
Selected repository files are downloaded into the Hugging Face cache.
Guide limitations
- Private repositories require a Hugging Face token.
- For gated repositories, accept the model's license on its Hugging Face page before downloading.
