Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use the browser tool for interactive cleanup or vectorization; use the JavaScript library when incorporating its documented image-processing functions into a project.

Who it is for

  • Pixel-art creators who want to correct inconsistent grids, color bleeding or image artifacts.
  • People who need to convert PNG or JPG images into editable, scalable SVG graphics.
  • JavaScript developers who want to use the library’s image-processing functions in their projects.

Documented uses

  • Detect or specify pixel scale, downscale pixel art and align it to a grid.
  • Reduce palette colors and optionally clean pixel-art noise or transparency.
  • Filter and simplify raster images before tracing them into SVG.
  • Inspect processed images, adjust settings and replace colors in the resulting palette.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The pixel-art processor offers automatic scale detection using runs-based or edge-aware methods, as well as a manual scale factor.
  • Pixel processing includes multiple downscaling approaches, grid snapping, palette quantization and optional morphological or jaggy cleanup.
  • The vectorizer uses imagetracer.js with pre- and post-processing filters and exposes tracing options.
  • The browser tool can be run locally, but requires an HTTP or HTTPS server rather than direct file:// access.
  • The repository specifies the MIT license.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Run the browser tool from a local copy

Open the included browser tool through a local HTTP server and process an image in its interface.

Before you start

  • A local copy of the project files.
  • Python 3.x, Node.js with http-server, or VS Code Live Server.
  • A web browser.

Steps

  1. Start a local server from the project root using one of the README’s documented methods: Python’s http.server, npx http-server, or VS Code Live Server.

  2. Open the browser tool at the local server address, using the selected port and the /browser-tool/ path.

  3. Upload an image by selecting a file, dragging it into the tool, or pasting it from the clipboard; adjust settings and inspect the before-and-after view.

  4. Download the processed PNG or SVG, or copy the result to the clipboard.

Expected outcome

An image processed in the browser tool, with a PNG output for pixel-art processing or an SVG for vectorization.

Guide limitations

  • The tool must be served over HTTP or HTTPS; opening its files directly through file:// does not support the required module imports.
  • The README documents the local browser tool workflow; this guide does not establish results for any particular image or settings.
