Practical overview
When it fits
Use Wtpsplit when an application needs sentence or semantic-unit boundaries as a Python library step, especially for multilingual text or text where punctuation alone is not a reliable guide.
Who it is for
- Developers building text-processing or NLP pipelines.
- Practitioners who need sentence segmentation for multilingual text.
- Teams preparing text in domain- or style-specific formats for downstream processing.
Documented uses
- Split a text string into sentence segments.
- Process multiple texts as a batch and receive segments for each input.
- Preprocess text into semantic units for a downstream NLP task.
- Adapt segmentation to a language or domain using documented LoRA settings.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and uses the MIT license.
- The README recommends
-smmodels for general sentence segmentation. - Three-layer models are described as a speed-conscious choice; 12-layer models are identified as the best-performing options.
- PyTorch GPU use is optional in the examples; ONNX CPU and GPU installation extras are documented.
- LoRA-based settings support adaptation to a language and style or domain.
- TorchInductor is optional, requires PyTorch 2.0 or later, and can slow the first split while graphs are built; this optimization is for PyTorch checkpoints, not ONNX.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Wtpsplit and segment text with SaT
Set up the Python package and use a documented SaT model to split text into sentence segments.
Before you start
- Python environment with package installation available.
- Wtpsplit package installed with
pip install wtpsplit.
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install wtpsplitImport SaT from
wtpsplitand load a model such asSaT("sat-3l-sm").Pass a text string to
sat.split(...)to obtain its sentence segments.
Expected outcome
The split call returns sentence segments for the supplied text.
Guide limitations
- The README notes that
-smmodels are intended for general sentence segmentation. - GPU use is optional; the documented example does not require moving the model to a GPU.
