Practical overview
When it fits
Use X Clip when you need a code-level PyTorch component for text-image learning experiments or want to configure CLIP-style training with custom encoders and documented experimental objectives.
Who it is for
- Machine-learning developers implementing text-image representation learning.
- Researchers experimenting with contrastive objectives, self-supervision or multiview training.
- Developers integrating custom vision or text encoders into a CLIP-style training setup.
Documented uses
- Train a model to align text and image representations using contrastive loss.
- Explore options such as patch dropout, decoupled contrastive learning and multiview losses.
- Adapt a custom vision transformer or text transformer as an encoder.
Requirements & limits
The repository documents installation through pip and lists an MIT license.
- The project is a Python library rather than a hosted application; users supply their own data and training workflow.
- Custom image encoders must return batch × sequence × dimension embeddings, with
dim_imageset to the output dimension. - The documented external text-encoder interface requires embeddings that include the CLS token.
- The README provides mock-data training examples but does not document an end-to-end dataset or deployment workflow.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install X Clip and set up a contrastive-training example
Install the library and prepare the documented CLIP training call using text and image tensors.
Before you start
- Python environment with PyTorch installed
- Text and image tensors shaped to match the configured token count and image size
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install x-clipImport
torchandCLIPfromx_clip.Create a
CLIPinstance with text, image and latent dimensions and encoder settings.Pass text and image batches to the model with
return_loss=True, then callloss.backward().
Expected outcome
The example returns a contrastive loss from the text-image batches for use in a PyTorch training step.
Guide limitations
- The README's basic example uses mock tensors rather than a real dataset.
- This setup example does not document a complete optimizer, data pipeline or trained model deployment.
Connect an external vision transformer
Configure the library to use a vision transformer as its image encoder.
Before you start
- PyTorch
vit_pytorchversion 0.25.6 or later- An image encoder that returns embeddings shaped as batch × sequence × dimension
Steps
Install
vit_pytorchwith the command below.pip install vit_pytorch>=0.25.6Create a ViT and wrap it with
Extractorusingreturn_embeddings_only=True.Pass the wrapped encoder to
CLIPasimage_encoderand setdim_imageto the encoder output dimension.
Expected outcome
The CLIP instance is configured with the supplied vision transformer for image embeddings.
Guide limitations
- The documented setup requires the encoder output dimension and
dim_imageto match. - The example does not cover training or deployment of a resulting model.
