Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use the repository when you need Shardeum implementation code and documented steps for local network development or testing.

Who it is for

  • Developers building or testing EVM-compatible dApps against a local Shardeum network.
  • Technical users who need to start a local multi-node Shardeum environment.

Documented uses

  • Configure and start a ten-node local Shardeum network.
  • Provide a local JSON-RPC endpoint for applications.
  • Connect MetaMask to the local network for testing.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under MIT.

  • The documented prerequisite versions are Node.js 18.19.1, npm 10.2.4 and Rust 1.74.1.
  • The JSON-RPC server is installed and started from a separate repository.
  • The README gives localhost:8080 as the default RPC URL and chain ID 8082 for MetaMask configuration.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up and start a local Shardeum network

Prepare the documented ten-node local network and start it with the Shardus CLI.

Before you start

  • Node.js 18.19.1
  • npm 10.2.4
  • Rust 1.74.1
  • Docker is optional for containerized deployment

Steps

  1. Clone the Shardeum repository and install its dependencies with npm ci.

  2. Set LOAD_JSON_CONFIGS to the full path of debug-10-nodes.config.json in the local repository.

  3. Compile the project with npm run prepare, then install the Shardus CLI and update the archiver package as shown in the README.

  4. Start the local network with shardus start 10.

Expected outcome

The README’s documented command starts a local Shardeum network with ten nodes.

Guide limitations

  • The README directs users to a separate local-environment setup page for environment configuration details.
  • This recipe covers the local network; running the JSON-RPC server is a separate setup.
