Practical overview
When it fits
Consider it when maintaining or evaluating a Unity project that needs a Watson integration and you can account for the SDK’s deprecation and service changes.
Who it is for
- Unity developers adding IBM Watson service integrations to an application.
- Teams maintaining an existing Unity project that uses this SDK.
Documented uses
- Add Watson service integrations to a Unity application.
- Prepare a Unity project with the SDK and its core dependency.
- Configure service credentials for an intended Watson service.
Requirements & limits
The README requires an IBM Cloud account and Unity. It says the free Unity Personal edition can be used. The repository and release binaries are being deprecated, and new changes after the notice must be compiled independently.
- The SDK is C# and targets Unity projects.
- The IBM Unity SDK Core is a separate required download.
- Unity 2018.2 or later requires the documented .NET 4.x scripting runtime and API compatibility settings.
- Unity Web Player/WebGL is not supported in the documented build settings.
- The repository says IBM team support and release-binary updates are ending.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Add the SDK and Core directories to a Unity project
Prepare a Unity project with the SDK source and its separate core dependency.
Before you start
- Unity
- IBM Watson SDK for Unity release
- Latest release of IBM Unity SDK Core
Steps
Set Unity build settings to a platform other than Unity Web Player/WebGL.
For Unity 2018.2 or later, set Scripting Runtime Version and API Compatibility Level to .NET 4.x equivalent.
Move the unity-sdk and unity-sdk-core directories into the Unity project’s Assets directory.
Expected outcome
The SDK and core source directories are present in the Unity project’s Assets directory.
Guide limitations
- This guide covers setup only, not compiling or calling a Watson service.
- The repository and release binaries are being deprecated; new changes after the notice must be compiled independently.
Retrieve credentials for a Watson service
Obtain the endpoint and credentials used to instantiate a Watson service in an application.
Before you start
- IBM Cloud account
- A Watson service instance, or the ability to create one
Steps
Choose the Watson service to use and sign in to IBM Cloud.
For an existing service, open it, select Service credentials, then View credentials.
If no instance exists, create the service under Watson, name the service and credential, select a plan, and create it.
Open Service Credentials and select View credentials.
Expected outcome
The service credentials provide an endpoint URL and either an API key or a username and password for use with the SDK.
Guide limitations
- Service credentials are separate from IBM Cloud account credentials.
- The README assigns responsibility for securing service credentials to the developer.
