Practical overview

When it fits

Use Laya when work events arrive across multiple connected services and you want an AI-assisted triage layer that researches events and stages actions for human review.

Who it is for

  • People who monitor work activity across communication, project-management, calendar and code-hosting services.
  • Users who want AI to research incoming events and stage responses or other actions for review.
  • Developers evaluating a self-hostable notification workflow with local or cloud language-model options.

Documented uses

  • Gather notifications from services such as Slack, Gmail, GitHub, Jira, Notion and Outlook.
  • Prioritize and research incoming events, then prepare approval-ready action suggestions.
  • Work through complex card-based tasks such as bug fixes or code reviews with a coding agent and approval steps.
  • Choose local Ollama or LM Studio models, or configure cloud models with personal API keys.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The project is identified as open source under the Apache-2.0 license. The documented local development setup requires Python 3, Node.js, npm and Cargo.

  • The documented workflow uses local n8n as an integration gateway alongside a Python engine and Tauri interface.
  • Local model use is documented through Ollama and LM Studio; cloud model use requires user-provided API keys.
  • The README describes approval cards before outbound actions such as sending replies or creating pull requests.
  • The development instructions cover setup and launch; connecting service accounts and carrying out a complete production workflow are not covered in the available setup excerpt.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up Laya for local development

Install the documented development dependencies and start Laya’s local engine and interface.

Before you start

  • A checkout of the Laya repository.
  • Python 3, Node.js, npm and Cargo available in the environment.

Steps

  1. Run scripts/setup-dev.sh to create the Python virtual environment, install engine and UI dependencies, install local n8n, and create data and log directories.

  2. Run scripts/dev.sh to start the Python engine and Tauri development interface.

Expected outcome

The development engine runs at 127.0.0.1:8420 and the Tauri development process opens the Laya window; n8n is managed by the app.

Guide limitations

  • This is a development setup guide; it does not document connecting an account or completing an event-to-action workflow.
  • The README notes that a plain browser UI needs a matching engine token, while the Tauri app handles token setup itself.
COMPARE OPTIONS
