Practical overview
When it fits
Use OASIS when you need a programmable social-media simulation populated by interacting LLM agents, rather than an individual chatbot or a live social-network service.
Who it is for
- Researchers studying social phenomena in simulated online communities
- Developers building large-scale multi-agent interaction experiments
Documented uses
- Model how information spreads through an online community
- Explore polarization, herd behavior and other emergent social patterns
- Configure agent profiles and actions for social-network simulations
- Compare interaction patterns in simulated Reddit- or Twitter-like environments
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and lists the Apache-2.0 license. Its quick start uses a Python package and requires an OpenAI API key for the shown model configuration.
- The project describes simulations of up to one million agents.
- The documented quick start uses OpenAI through the CAMEL model interface.
- Agent profiles and available actions are configured for the simulation.
- The repository lists interest-based and hot-score-based recommendation algorithms.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a Reddit agent simulation
Prepare the documented OASIS quick-start components and configure a Reddit simulation in Python.
Before you start
- Python environment with the OASIS package installed
- OpenAI API key
- Agent profile JSON file, such as the linked Reddit example
- CAMEL model interface and an OpenAI model, as shown in the example
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install camel-oasisSet the
OPENAI_API_KEYenvironment variable using the command appropriate to the shell.Prepare an agent profile file and place it in the local
./data/redditfolder.In Python, create the model and Reddit agent graph, define the available actions, create the OASIS environment with a database path, reset it, and step through actions.
Expected outcome
A configured Reddit simulation environment that can process manually specified actions and LLM actions and store simulation data at the chosen database path.
Guide limitations
- The example configures an OpenAI model and requires an OpenAI API key.
