Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when you are building a Python agent that needs to work with blockchain services and are prepared to assess each module's readiness and implement application-specific controls for any transaction-writing workflow.
Who it is for
- Python developers building blockchain-interacting AI agents.
- Teams prototyping DeFi, restaking, portfolio-tracking or cross-chain workflows.
Documented uses
- Create an agent for a read-only balance check on Base.
- Prototype agents for DeFi or restaking tasks.
- Develop portfolio-tracking or bridging agent workflows.
Requirements & limits
The project is an open-source public repository under the MIT license. Python 3.10 or newer is listed as a requirement.
- The quick-start example uses Base, a wallet key and an Anthropic API key.
- The project describes itself as beta software; module readiness ranges from stable to experimental.
- Write operations require a pre-sign gate, execution policy and application-specific authorization provider; a spend governor or confirmation prompt alone is not sufficient.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up a read-only balance-check agent on Base
Install the Python package and configure the documented quick-start flow to ask an agent to check balances on Base.
Before you start
- Python 3.10 or newer
- A wallet private key set as PRIVATE_KEY
- An Anthropic API key set as ANTHROPIC_API_KEY
Steps
Install the package with the command below.
pip install web3-agent-kitSet the PRIVATE_KEY and ANTHROPIC_API_KEY environment variables.
Create a ChainManager for Chain.BASE, load the wallet with Wallet.from_env, and create an Agent with the Uniswap tool.
Run the documented prompt,
Check my balances on Base.
Expected outcome
A read-only agent flow that returns the result of a Base balance check.
Guide limitations
- This documented flow does not enable transaction signing or other write actions.
- The project is beta software and module readiness varies.
