Practical overview
When it fits
Use Hivemind when a Hive application needs indexed social data and an API layer that offloads most API requests from hived.
Who it is for
- Developers building social-network applications on Hive.
- Operators providing an API data layer for Hive social applications.
Documented uses
- Serve discussion feeds, including blog, trending, hot and newly created views.
- Retrieve community feeds, membership and moderation data.
- Access normalized account profile and reputation data.
- Read follow and reblog relationships and related social states.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project as open source under the MIT license.
- A working HAF database is required.
- The documented host setup uses PostgREST 12.0.2; Nginx rewrites JSON-RPC requests to its endpoint.
- Reputation-dependent API calls require the separate reputation-tracker HAF application.
- Hivemind processes irreversible blocks, and social-data queries may be slow before synchronization reaches the Hive head and creates indexes.
- Wallet, order, escrow, key, recovery and account-history operations should be queried from hived.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Hivemind locally with a virtual environment
Install the Hivemind Python package on a host with an existing, working HAF database.
Before you start
- An existing, working HAF database.
- Python 3 and pip.
- PostgREST version 12.0.2 installed for the Hivemind server.
Steps
Clone the repository with its submodules: the command below, then enter the
hiveminddirectory.git clone --recurse-submodules https://gitlab.syncad.com/hive/hivemind.gitUpdate the Python installation tools with the command below.
python3 -m pip install --upgrade pip setuptools wheelCreate and activate a virtual environment, then install Hivemind: the command below,
. venv/bin/activate, and the command below.python3 -m venv venv/pip install .Install PostgREST 12.0.2 using the README's download and installation steps, then verify it with
postgrest --version.
Expected outcome
The Hivemind Python package is installed in a virtual environment, and the required PostgREST version is installed and verifiable.
Guide limitations
- This installs the package but does not install or configure the HAF database or start the indexer or API server.
- Hivemind processes irreversible blocks stored in the HAF database.
- Nginx is required as a reverse proxy for the JSON-RPC API; its runtime configuration is not covered by this installation recipe.
Install Hivemind and reputation tracker into a local HAF database
Set up Hivemind and reputation tracker using the documented default local HAF database configuration.
Before you start
- A locally installed HAF using the default configuration, such as PostgreSQL running on
localhost. - The repository cloned with its submodules, including the Hivemind and reputation tracker scripts.
Steps
Set up the PostgreSQL configuration with
./scripts/setup_postgres.sh --postgres-url=postgresql://haf_admin@localhost:5432/haf_block_log.Install reputation tracker with
./reputation_tracker/scripts/install_app.sh --postgres-url=postgresql://haf_admin@localhost:5432/haf_block_log --schema=reptracker_app --is_forking="false".Install Hivemind with
./scripts/install_app.sh --postgres-url=postgresql://haf_admin@localhost:5432/haf_block_log.
Expected outcome
The documented setup scripts have installed the PostgreSQL configuration, reputation tracker, and Hivemind application for the local HAF database.
Guide limitations
- These steps cover installation only; they do not start synchronization or serve API requests.
- The commands are documented for a local HAF installation using its default configuration.
