Hyperledger Cello

Hyperledger Cello is an open-source control system for provisioning and operating enterprise blockchain networks across bare-metal, virtual-machine and container environments. It combines a dashboard, API engine, database and blockchain agent to help platform teams create customizable networks, maintain pools of running networks and adjust operational resources.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Cello when blockchain network provisioning and ongoing environment management are the central requirements, especially when the team wants to run the control system on its own server or container infrastructure.

Who it is for

  • Enterprise blockchain platform teams
  • Infrastructure and DevOps engineers managing distributed-ledger environments
  • Organizations building a self-hosted Blockchain as a Service platform
  • Developers evaluating Hyperledger-based network operations

Documented uses

  • Provision customizable blockchain networks
  • Operate a pool of running blockchain environments
  • Monitor system status through dashboards
  • Adjust chain numbers and resource allocations
  • Coordinate blockchain deployments across Docker, Swarm, Kubernetes, virtual machines and bare-metal infrastructure

Requirements & limits

The project is publicly available under the Apache-2.0 license. The documented local setup uses Docker, Docker Compose V2, Make and Node.js; Kubernetes is optional for that preparation path.

  • The documented local workflow starts multiple components, including a dashboard, API engine, PostgreSQL database and Fabric agent.
  • Deployment targets include bare-metal systems, virtual machines, vSphere clouds and container clusters.
  • Kubernetes is listed as optional in the local quick start, while Docker and Docker Compose are required there.
  • The repository identifies Python as its primary language and uses Make for service-management commands.
  • The project is infrastructure for operating blockchain networks, so evaluation should focus on platform integration and network-management needs rather than end-user application features.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Start the documented local Cello service

Prepare the listed environment and start Cello’s local dashboard, API engine, PostgreSQL database and Fabric agent.

Before you start

  • Docker
  • Docker Compose V2
  • Make
  • Node.js
  • Kubernetes is optional

Steps

  1. Set the storage path with export CELLO_STORAGE_PATH=$(pwd)/cello.

  2. Run the command below to build the required local images and start the local services.

    Documented command
    make local
  3. Visit the dashboard at localhost:8081.

  4. Use the command below to stop the service, or the command below to clean all containers.

    Documented command
    make stop
    Documented command
    make clean

Expected outcome

A locally started Cello service with the documented dashboard and supporting components.

Guide limitations

  • This recipe covers the documented local startup flow, not the creation or operation of a specific blockchain network.
  • The repository directs users to its troubleshooting section for unresolved setup questions.
