Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Snowbridge when a project needs a bridge between Polkadot and Ethereum, or when developing and testing the bridge's component services in a local environment.

Who it is for

  • Developers building applications or transfer experiences that connect Polkadot and Ethereum.
  • Protocol engineers working on Polkadot parachain pallets, Ethereum contracts or cross-chain relaying.
  • Teams setting up local test environments for bridge development and integration testing.

Documented uses

  • Relay messages between Polkadot and Ethereum through the bridge services.
  • Develop or modify the bridge's Polkadot pallets and Ethereum contracts.
  • Provision a local testnet with local deployments of both networks.
  • Run integration testing against the local testnet using the project's smoke-test component.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

  • The implementation is distributed across Snowfork/snowbridge and a separate Snowfork polkadot-sdk fork; identify the component before beginning work.
  • The project uses Nix for its developer environment.
  • Local testnet provisioning and integration tests have separate README guides.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Set up the Snowbridge developer shell

Prepare a local Snowbridge development environment using Nix and run the repository initialization script.

Before you start

  • Nix installed
  • The Snowbridge repository checked out locally

Steps

  1. Enable Nix flakes by adding experimental-features = nix-command flakes to ~/.config/nix/nix.conf.

  2. From the repository root containing flake.nix, run nix develop.

  3. Run scripts/init.sh once to initialize the environment.

Expected outcome

A Nix developer shell is activated and the repository initialization script has been run.

Guide limitations

  • These steps set up a developer environment; they do not document building, running, or deploying Snowbridge.
  • The README does not specify operating-system compatibility or resource requirements.
