Practical overview
When it fits
Use Scumble when an AI image change needs to remain a separate, adjustable layer, or when you want to combine image editing with a supported API provider or ComfyUI workflow.
Who it is for
- Image editors who want AI-generated changes to remain editable as layers.
- ComfyUI users who want to work with recipes from an image-editing canvas.
- Users with supported provider API keys who want to render without setting up ComfyUI.
Documented uses
- Inpaint a selected area of an existing image and keep the result on its own layer.
- Generate an image from described regions marked with boxes on a blank canvas.
- Edit or upscale images through a supported API provider or ComfyUI workflow.
- Export a layered composition as PSD or OpenRaster.
Requirements & limits
The project describes Scumble as free and open-source under GPL-3.0 and says it needs no Scumble account. Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit) are documented; x64 Linux AppImage and .deb builds are listed as early builds the author had not run. macOS is planned, not started. API-provider use requires a provider key; the documentation says payment goes directly to that provider.
- Rendering can use a provider API key, a user's own local or remote ComfyUI, or Comfy Cloud.
- API-key setup is documented as requiring neither ComfyUI nor a separate server.
- Every AI result returns as a layer that can be masked, blended, filtered and adjusted for colour match.
- PSD and OpenRaster export retain layers and masks.
- Windows is the documented primary platform; Linux builds are flagged as unrun by the author, and macOS is not yet underway.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Connect Scumble to an image-model API
Set up provider credentials for rendering without a ComfyUI server.
Before you start
- Scumble for Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit
- An API key from a provider supported in Scumble
Steps
Open Settings › API providers (Ctrl+,).
Paste the provider API key and save it.
Expected outcome
Scumble has the saved provider credential for rendering; the documented API-key route does not require ComfyUI or a separate server.
Guide limitations
- The provider may charge for API use; the documentation says payment goes directly to the provider.
- The setup steps do not cover making or running an image edit.
