Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Basemind when coding agents need a shared, searchable context layer spanning source code, project documents and Git history, or need a channel to coordinate repository work.

Who it is for

  • Developers using coding agents on repository-level tasks.
  • Teams that want coding agents to share repository context or coordinate work.

Documented uses

  • Find code structure, symbols, definitions, references and callers without reading entire files.
  • Search project documents and retrieved web pages alongside repository code.
  • Consult Git changes, blame, churn and symbol history.
  • Store and retrieve per-repository agent memory.
  • Coordinate agents through shared threads, membership and inbox tools.

Requirements & limits

The project is open-source under the MIT license. The README describes plugin, CLI and MCP-server use; installation instructions vary by coding-tool host.

  • Basemind is an MCP server and developer tool, not a standalone coding agent.
  • The README reports code-map support for more than 300 languages and document support across more than 90 formats.
  • Document search, code intelligence, Git tools, shared memory and agent communications are exposed as distinct tool groups.
  • The README describes a shared local index across plugin, CLI and MCP-server approaches.
  • Some code-search functionality is noted as requiring the code-search feature.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Install basemind as a Claude Code plugin

Add the basemind plugin and enable its live statusline in a Claude Code session.

Before you start

  • Claude Code with access to the session command interface.

Steps

  1. In a Claude Code session, run /plugin marketplace add Goldziher/basemind.

  2. Run /plugin install basemind@basemind.

  3. Restart Claude Code, then run /bm-statusline once to enable the live statusline.

Expected outcome

The basemind plugin is installed, and its live statusline is enabled.

Guide limitations

  • The installation commands must be run in the Claude Code session, not in a shell.
  • The statusline command is a one-time setup step.
  • Marketplace auto-update is recommended; alternatively, update the marketplace regularly by hand.
Source-based practical guide

Initialize basemind in a repository

Create basemind’s repository configuration and add its usage rules after installation.

Before you start

  • The basemind program is installed.
  • You can run commands from the repository root.

Steps

  1. From the repository root, run basemind init.

  2. Follow the capability-selection prompt, or use the documented non-interactive options --yes, --with , or --without .

  3. Review the generated configuration and rules files; use --print to preview changes without writing, or --no-rules to skip the rules step.

Expected outcome

Basemind writes a commented `basemind.toml` scaffold if one does not already exist and, by default, adds a basemind usage-rules block to a personal or git-ignored rules file.

Guide limitations

  • By default, initialization avoids modifying committed files; explicitly selecting a non-local rules target can write a committed file.
  • The non-interactive run skips the optional MCP auto-approval step unless its flag is passed.
  • The documented capability slugs are code-search-navigation, code-mapping-architecture, git-history, agent-comms, documents-rag, and semantic-search.
COMPARE OPTIONS
