Practical overview
When it fits
Use Agentfiles when you work in Obsidian and need to manage supported coding-agent files across tools, or when you want the plugin’s separate Claude Code conversation and Skillkit dashboard workflows.
Who it is for
- Obsidian users who manage skills across multiple coding assistants.
- Coding-agent users who want to search, create or edit supported skill files from a vault.
- Claude Code users who want to browse, search, tag and export conversation history to Obsidian.
Documented uses
- Browse skills, commands and agents from supported tools in one interface.
- Search supported files by name or content.
- Create a skill for a selected tool and file type, then edit it with Markdown preview.
- Install skills from skills.sh.
- Export Claude Code conversation history to an Obsidian vault.
Requirements & limits
Desktop-only for macOS, Windows and Linux. The repository specifies an MIT license.
- File support differs by coding tool: some entries support skills only, while others also expose commands, rules, memories or agents.
- Cline, Claude Desktop and Aider are listed for detection only.
- Agentfiles needs direct access to supported files outside the vault; writes occur for explicit create, edit, install, update or remove actions.
- The dashboard requires optional Skillkit analytics and a locally generated snapshot.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install Agentfiles manually in an Obsidian vault
Add the plugin files to an Obsidian vault and enable the plugin.
Before you start
- Obsidian
- The latest Agentfiles release files: main.js, manifest.json and styles.css
Steps
Download main.js, manifest.json and styles.css from the latest release.
Create the folder /.obsidian/plugins/agentfiles/.
Copy the three downloaded files into that folder.
Enable Agentfiles in Settings → Community plugins.
Expected outcome
Agentfiles is enabled as a community plugin in the vault.
Guide limitations
- Agentfiles is desktop-only and reads supported agent files outside the vault.
Generate a local Skillkit snapshot for Agentfiles analytics
Run the documented Skillkit scan used for Agentfiles dashboard analytics.
Before you start
- Bun installed and available on PATH
- Agentfiles installed in Obsidian
Steps
Run bunx @crafter/skillkit@latest scan.
Open the Agentfiles dashboard to view the available analytics.
Expected outcome
The dashboard can read the local Skillkit snapshot for usage analytics, burn rate, context tax and health metrics.
Guide limitations
- The dashboard requires Skillkit; Agentfiles does not execute the Skillkit CLI.
- The documented npx alternative still requires Bun installed and available on PATH.
