Practical overview
When it fits
Use it when an MCP-compatible AI client needs to issue IDA Pro analysis operations against local binaries, particularly for agent-assisted reverse engineering or Apple-target workflows.
Who it is for
- Reverse engineers who want an MCP-compatible AI agent to operate IDA Pro.
- Developers analyzing Mach-O binaries or working with dSYM/DWARF data and dyld shared-cache modules.
- Teams integrating IDA analysis into Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI or Cursor workflows.
Documented uses
- Open a binary and inspect its functions, disassembly and strings through an AI agent.
- Run function analysis in the background and check its progress.
- Select a Mach-O architecture slice and load related debug or shared-cache data.
- Use IDA tools to make targeted database changes or run stateful scripts that return JSON.
Requirements & limits
Self-hosted Rust server distributed through Homebrew, Scoop, Nix and GitHub release archives, with source-build instructions. The stable prerequisite is IDA Pro 9.4 with a valid license; an IDA 9.5 beta build is documented for macOS on Apple Silicon. The repository lists an MIT license.
- IDA Pro and a valid license are required; this server is a bridge to IDA, not a replacement for it.
- The stable release is documented for IDA Pro 9.4; choose a matching server version for older IDA releases, and note that the 9.5 beta package is limited to macOS on Apple Silicon.
- IDA library discovery differs by operating system and may require DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH, IDADIR or PATH configuration.
- Decompilation requires Hex-Rays and completed analysis.
- The documented MCP clients include Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI and Cursor.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Install and connect Ida MCP Rs to Claude Code
Install the server and register it with Claude Code on macOS, Linux or Windows.
Before you start
- IDA Pro 9.4 with a valid license for the stable release.
- A supported operating system and an installation method documented for it.
- Claude Code and access to its CLI.
Steps
Install ida-mcp using Homebrew on macOS or Linux, or Scoop on Windows; GitHub release archives are another documented distribution option.
On macOS, use the standard IDA installation location or set DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH if libida.dylib cannot be found. On Linux, set IDADIR for a non-default IDA location. On Windows, place ida-mcp.exe in the IDA directory or configure IDADIR and PATH so the IDA DLLs can load.
Register the server with Claude Code using
claude mcp add ida -- ida-mcpafter its executable and IDA libraries are discoverable.Use the configured agent to call IDA tools, for example to open a binary and list functions or inspect strings.
Expected outcome
Claude Code is configured to send MCP tool requests to the local IDA server, which can open and inspect binaries through IDA.
Guide limitations
- The guide documents IDA Pro 9.4 as the stable prerequisite; version mismatch can cause IDA-backed tools to fail.
- Decompilation requires Hex-Rays and completed analysis.
- Platform-specific library discovery may require environment configuration.
