Practical overview
When it fits
Use PyText when you need a Python-based NLP framework with distinct training, evaluation, export and inference-preview stages, particularly when a Caffe2 model artifact is part of the intended workflow.
Who it is for
- Developers building text-classification or other NLP models.
- Teams that need a configurable training workflow and a Caffe2 inference export.
- Practitioners who want to use PyText from Python scripts or Jupyter notebooks.
Documented uses
- Train a text model from configured datasets and parameters.
- Evaluate a trained model against test data.
- Export a model snapshot into a Caffe2 representation for inference.
- Try inputs against an exported model using the prediction REPL.
- Use or extend framework components when building custom NLP models.
Requirements & limits
- Requires Python 3.6 or later and a compatible PyTorch setup; GPU support depends on platform and installation choices.
- The quick-start model uses a tiny 10-example dataset and is intended to illustrate the workflow, not provide strong model performance.
- The documented prediction REPL operates on an exported Caffe2 model, while training and testing use PyText snapshots.
- The first-model tutorial uses existing model components; modifying architectures is outside its scope.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Train and export a text-classification model
Use the documented demo configuration to train a document classifier, then export its model snapshot for Caffe2 inference.
Before you start
- Python 3.6 or later.
- PyText installed, with a compatible PyTorch installation.
- The PyText demo configuration and its referenced data files.
Steps
Install PyText in a Python environment using the installation instructions.
Run
pytext train < demo/configs/docnn.jsonto train the documented demo model.Use the resulting snapshot with PyText's export command to create a serialized Caffe2 model.
Expected outcome
A trained PyText snapshot and, after export, a serialized Caffe2 model representation for inference.
Guide limitations
- The tutorial's included dataset has only 10 examples and is presented as a learning example; its reported results are poor.
- The tutorial documents the export command and purpose but does not specify the exact command invocation for exporting the snapshot.
