Practical overview
When it fits
Use Alink when your machine-learning workflow is intended to run with Apache Flink and you want to compose algorithm components through Java or PyAlink.
Who it is for
- Developers building machine-learning workflows with Apache Flink
- Java developers using Alink algorithm components and pipelines
- Python developers who want to use PyAlink in Jupyter notebooks
Documented uses
- Assemble features and connect them to a machine-learning algorithm in a pipeline.
- Build batch or streaming workflows using Alink operators.
- Develop classification, clustering, data-mining or graph-algorithm jobs.
Requirements & limits
The repository is public and identifies the project license as Apache-2.0. PyAlink setup documentation lists Python 3.6–3.8 and Java 8 prerequisites.
- PyAlink packages are separated by supported Flink version, so choose the package for the target environment.
- The documented interfaces distinguish batch execution from streaming execution.
- The repository provides Java and Python tutorials, while the README also lists component documentation and a plugin downloader.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Prepare a PyAlink environment
Install the PyAlink package that corresponds to the intended Flink version.
Before you start
- Python 3.6, 3.7 or 3.8
- Java 8
- Choose one PyAlink package appropriate to the Flink version
Steps
Select
pyalinkfor the documented latest supported Flink version, or choose apyalink-flinkpackage for a listed older version.Install the selected package with pip, such as the command below or the command below.
pip install pyalinkpip install pyalink-flink-1.12
Expected outcome
The selected PyAlink package is installed in the Python environment.
Guide limitations
pyalinkandpyalink-flink-*packages must not be installed together or alongside an older version; remove an existing package before switching.
Start a PyAlink notebook session
Initialize a local PyAlink environment in a Python notebook.
Before you start
- A PyAlink installation
- Python 3.6, 3.7 or 3.8
- Java 8
- Jupyter Notebook
Steps
Start Jupyter Notebook and create a Python 3 notebook.
Import the package with
from pyalink.alink import *.Initialize a local environment with
useLocalEnv(parallism, flinkHome=None, config=None).
Expected outcome
The documented initialization output is `JVM listening on ***` when the environment initializes successfully.
Guide limitations
- The guide covers environment initialization; it does not verify a particular installation or workload.
