Practical overview
When it fits
Use skaled when working directly with SKALE chain infrastructure or when a project needs an Ethereum-compatible client for a SKALE deployment. Solidity dApp developers can use its EVM compatibility; building from source is relevant when working with the client itself.
Who it is for
- Operators building or running SKALE blockchain infrastructure.
- Developers creating Solidity dApps for SKALE chains with Ethereum-compatible tooling.
- Engineers working with the SKALE consensus integration or the client’s dynamic Oracle.
Documented uses
- Build the skaled client from source on Ubuntu 24.04.
- Use an Ethereum-compatible client for a SKALE blockchain deployment.
- Develop Solidity applications for SKALE chains using EVM tooling.
- Work with the SKALE BFT consensus core or the client’s dynamic Oracle capability.
Requirements & limits
The source repository is public and specifies the GPL-3.0 license.
- Skaled is a blockchain client and infrastructure component, not a hosted dApp builder.
- The documented build environment is Ubuntu 24.04, with GCC 11, CMake, recursive submodules and a set of system packages.
- The repository identifies the dynamic Oracle but does not describe its setup or usage in the provided overview.
- The source-build instructions end at compilation; running with Intel SGX is covered by separate documentation.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Build skaled from source on Ubuntu 24.04
Prepare and compile the skaled client using the repository’s documented Ubuntu 24.04 build process.
Before you start
- Ubuntu 24.04
- Git and the ability to install the listed Ubuntu packages
- GCC 11 and CMake
Steps
Clone the repository with its submodules using the command below, then enter the
skaleddirectory.git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/skalenetwork/skaled.gitInstall the Ubuntu 24.04 packages listed in the README and configure GCC 11 as the default compiler.
Install the latest CMake as directed by the README, then run
cd depsand./build.sh DEBUG=1to build dependencies. From the repository root, configure with
cmake -H. -Bbuild -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Debugand compile withcmake --build build -- -j$(nproc).
Expected outcome
The documented process configures and compiles the default skaled build targets.
Guide limitations
- The repository officially builds, runs and tests on Ubuntu 24.04; using other Ubuntu versions is at the builder’s own risk.
- The README’s build section does not cover running the client; it links to separate instructions for running skaled with Intel SGX.
