Atlassian MCP Server

Atlassian MCP Server is a cloud-hosted Model Context Protocol server that connects compatible AI clients to Atlassian Cloud products, including Jira, Confluence, Jira Service Management, Bitbucket, Compass and Loom. It provides authenticated access for search and other supported actions, with access governed by the user’s existing Atlassian permissions.

Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when an MCP-compatible assistant or development tool needs authenticated access to information and actions in an Atlassian Cloud site.

Who it is for

  • Teams that want compatible AI clients to use information from their Atlassian Cloud products.
  • Developers configuring MCP connections in supported AI assistants, IDEs or other MCP clients.

Documented uses

  • Search or summarize Atlassian content from a compatible AI client.
  • Create Jira issues or reference project information in an AI-assisted workflow.
  • Connect an AI assistant to Atlassian services using OAuth 2.1 or API-token authentication.
Before you choose

Requirements & limits

The remote server is cloud-hosted. Authentication uses OAuth 2.1 or API tokens. Local IDE/client setups that use the MCP proxy require Node.js v18 or later; OAuth requires a modern browser.

  • The service is a connector, not the AI assistant: an MCP-compatible client is needed to use it.
  • A supported Atlassian Cloud site and appropriate user permissions are required.
  • The server supports several Atlassian products, but available actions depend on the supported tools exposed to the client.
  • The public repository is licensed under Apache-2.0; the remote server itself is hosted by Atlassian.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Connect a client using the remote server URL

Add the Atlassian remote MCP server to a compatible client and begin its authentication flow.

Before you start

  • An Atlassian Cloud site with one or more supported products.
  • An MCP-compatible client.
  • A modern browser for OAuth login, or API token credentials for headless authentication.

Steps

  1. Add the remote server URL https://mcp.atlassian.com/v2/mcp in the client’s MCP configuration.

  2. Start the client’s Atlassian MCP authentication flow.

  3. Authenticate with OAuth 2.1 or use API-token authentication, according to the client setup.

Expected outcome

The client connects to the Atlassian MCP Server and can access supported Atlassian data subject to the user’s permissions.

Guide limitations

  • The available products and actions depend on the connected Atlassian site, client support and user permissions.
  • For IDEs or other local clients that use the local MCP proxy, Node.js v18 or later is required.
