Practical overview
When it fits
Use Memex when you need to retrieve prior work from locally saved coding-agent conversations, inspect its transcript, or continue a supported session in its original tool.
Who it is for
- Developers who use coding assistants and need to find or reread earlier conversations.
- Users of supported coding tools who want to resume an available session in its original agent.
- Teams or individual developers who want agent histories searchable across machines over SSH.
Documented uses
- Search indexed coding-agent conversations by topic or project.
- Read an original transcript and resume a supported session in its source tool.
- Search saved Claude Code and Codex memories alongside conversation history.
- Review token usage reconstructed from local tool records.
Requirements & limits
- Indexing and search depend on conversation records available locally for each source tool.
- Resume requires the source agent to be installed and the session data to remain available.
- Embeddings, plaintext reasoning indexing and token tracking are off by default.
- Token-use reporting depends on source-specific local records; Copilot usage requires local OpenTelemetry export files, while Kiro reports credits rather than token counts or costs.
- Experimental transfers reconstruct conversation content and do not migrate the complete agent runtime or workspace state.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Index and search local agent history
Create an index of available local conversations and retrieve a matching transcript.
Before you start
- Install Memex using a documented installation method.
- Have locally available conversation records from a supported coding tool.
Steps
Run
memex indexto index discovered local agent history.Run
memex search "deployment rollback" --format textwith a search phrase relevant to the earlier work.Use
memex session SESSION_IDto read a transcript page for a session.
Expected outcome
Memex indexes available history, returns matching search results and can display a selected transcript.
Guide limitations
- History coverage depends on the records each source tool saves locally.
- Semantic and hybrid search require optional local embeddings; keyword search uses BM25.
