Practical overview
When it fits
Use Openaci when you want to explore or prototype an agent that acts on a computer from written instructions, and can review its behavior in a controlled environment.
Who it is for
- Developers exploring agent-driven computer automation.
- Researchers prototyping interfaces between AI agents and desktop operations.
Documented uses
- Set up a local agent-computer interface with an OpenAI API key.
- Launch the CLI and provide a natural-language instruction for the agent.
- Interrupt an active command-line run with Ctrl+C.
Requirements & limits
- The documented setup requires an OpenAI API key.
- The project is a local Python CLI workflow, not a documented hosted service.
- macOS setup adds Xcode developer tools and pyobjc-framework-ApplicationServices.
- The README labels the code experimental and advises against relying on it for production or critical systems.
Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.
Set up Openaci and launch its command-line app
Prepare the documented Python environment and open the agent command-line application.
Before you start
- A local machine with Python and pip.
- An OpenAI API key.
- For macOS: the Xcode developer package and pyobjc-framework-ApplicationServices.
Steps
Clone the Openaci repository and change into its directory.
Install dependencies with pip install -r requirements.txt.
Set OPENAI_API_KEY to your OpenAI API key.
Install the package in editable mode with pip install -e ., then run python openaci/cli_app.py.
Expected outcome
The command-line application starts and is ready for an agent instruction.
Guide limitations
- The project is described as experimental.
- The README recommends controlled testing and warns of possible unintended actions, data loss, and system instability.
