Atrophy

Atrophy is a command-line coding practice tool that presents exercises to solve without AI, grades or scores the results, and tracks skill ratings over time. Its drills cover syntax recall, debugging, code reading, API memory and design decomposition. A dashboard charts performance and confidence by skill, with a separate comparison for optional AI-assisted drills.

Practical overview

When it fits

Use Atrophy when you want recurring, measurable practice without AI assistance, or a separate assisted-versus-unaided score comparison. The README suggests a baseline followed by drills two or three times a week and an AI-enabled comparison once a month.

Who it is for

  • Developers who want a structured way to practise coding without AI assistance.
  • Developers who want to track exercise performance across specific coding skills.
  • Developers who want to compare scores from solo and AI-assisted practice.

Documented uses

  • Establish a baseline across five coding skills.
  • Complete short exercises targeted to a neglected skill or a chosen skill and language.
  • Review changes in skill ratings and confidence over time.
  • Compare unaided exercise scores with scores from AI-enabled drills.
  • Export recorded data as JSON or view ratings and practice streaks in the terminal.

Requirements & limits

The repository is public and licensed under MIT. The documented CLI requires Node.js version 22 or later; Python 3 on PATH is needed for Python exercises. The README describes local SQLite data and an optional public leaderboard that users can opt into.

  • Exercises are documented in Python and JavaScript, across three difficulty tiers.
  • Grading differs by exercise type: hidden tests, output comparison, answer matching, or a self-scored rubric.
  • Ratings change when drills are taken; confidence bands widen when practice is skipped, so they communicate uncertainty as well as score trends.
  • The AI-assisted drill is a separate monthly comparison, while regular drills are presented as unaided practice.
  • The README documents a local SQLite data file, JSON export, and opt-in leaderboard publishing.

Source-based practical guide

Install Atrophy and establish a baseline

Install the CLI and record initial ratings across its five coding skills.

Before you start

  • Node.js version 22 or later.
  • Python 3 on PATH if you want to use Python exercises.
  • A terminal and an editor available through the $EDITOR environment variable.

Steps

  1. Install the CLI globally with the command below.

    Documented command
    npm install -g atrophy
  2. Run atrophy baseline to complete one exercise for each of the five skills and set starting ratings.

Expected outcome

A starting rating is set for each of the five skills; subsequent drills can add practice results.

Guide limitations

  • The baseline takes about 25 minutes, according to the README.
  • Python 3 is required for Python exercises; the README also documents JavaScript exercises.
  • The guide covers installation and baseline setup, not verification of a local installation.
