Understand the project

Practical overview

When it fits

Use it when Starknet development or testing calls for a local environment with control over network state, blocks, time, or repeatable snapshots.

Who it is for

  • Starknet developers testing contracts in a local environment.
  • Teams that need to explore contract behavior against forked mainnet or testnet state.
  • JavaScript test developers who want to use the official wrapper to install, spawn, and use Devnet in tests.

Documented uses

  • Run contract tests against a configurable local Starknet testnet.
  • Interact with contracts deployed on mainnet or testnet through forking.
  • Test account activity, L1-L2 interaction, and predeployed accounts or tokens.
  • Explore block- and time-dependent contract behavior.
  • Save, restore, or restart test state using snapshots, dump, and load operations.

Requirements & limits

The project is available as a public GitHub repository under the MIT license. The repository documents CLI configuration, Docker images, and a JavaScript wrapper.

  • Forking supports interaction with contracts deployed on either mainnet or testnet.
  • Block and time manipulation provide controls for scenarios that depend on chain progression.
  • Snapshot, dump, load, and restart features support saving and restoring test state.
  • Native blockifier execution is available through the optional cairo_native Cargo feature.

Check current requirements in the official documentation. Source-based guidance does not mean OpenViST has run or independently tested this project.

Source-based practical guide

Build and run Devnet with native execution enabled

Build or run Starknet Devnet RS with its optional cairo_native Cargo feature.

Before you start

  • A Rust/Cargo environment capable of building the project from its repository.

Steps

  1. From the repository, build with the command below.

    Documented command
    cargo build --features cairo_native
  2. To run with the feature instead, use the command below and provide the desired Devnet arguments.

    Documented command
    cargo run --features cairo_native --

Expected outcome

Devnet is built or launched with cairo_native enabled; startup logs include `cairo_native enable` when the feature is enabled.

Guide limitations

  • This feature is optional.
  • Devnet is not a replacement for the official testnet; test on alpha-sepolia after using Devnet.
  • Devnet does not support the starknet_getStorageProof RPC method, and block roots are set to 0.
